We're off to Play in Christchurch

Team Opentree is packing its bags for the International Play Association World Conference.

We’re carrying 22 years of Play from Indian classrooms, fresh research to share, and a lot of curiosity about how the rest of the world plays.

About IPA 2026

The International Play Association stands up for every child’s right to play. Its triennial World Conference brings together researchers, practitioners, designers and advocates who believe Play belongs at the centre of childhood. This year again, we’re in the room too.

22 years of Play, packed for the trip

Since 2004, we’ve been bringing Conscious Play into government and under-resourced community schools and child-care centres in India, working with teachers so they become confident Play practitioners and with governments so Play becomes part of everyday school life.

Here’s what that adds up to:

And there’s more in our bags!

Our Presentation: State of Play

State of Play is The Opentree Foundation’s study of children’s everyday play and their right to play that was conducted in 2025 and published in April 2026.

Conducted over three months across six Maharashtra districts, it draws on 605 respondents: 228 children, 299 caregivers, and 78 teachers and Anganwadi workers from 36 schools and children’s institutions.

Play Is Everywhere

Play is Everywhere is our Instagram page and a crowd-sourced archive of how, where, why, and what humans and animals play. It could be a game of hopscotch in a Mumbai lane, a dog chasing waves on a New Zealand beach, or a grandparent teaching a card trick.

This week, the world’s play community is gathered in Christchurch, and we’d love to see Play through your eyes. Spotted Play in action at the conference, on the streets or back home?

Snap it, share it and tag @play_is_everywhere to contribute to the growing Play archive.

Let’s continue our conversation

We are bringing 22 years of work in play-based learning from India to the global play community at IPA 2026. We are looking forward to connecting with fellow play advocates, exchanging ideas and exploring what we can make possible for children together.
